Streets of Denver

Our film program has become an essential experience at William Smith. Through film, students learn invaluable skills such as collaboration, creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and time management in an engaging and exciting environment. Students also receive exposure to a thriving industry with multiple job opportunities both behind and in front of the camera. Our students have created some exceptional short films over the years, including the Grand Prize winner in last years Aurora Borealis Film Festival. William Smith offers several film projects including Beginning Film Studies and Production, Screenwriting, Silent Film and Live Score, Advanced Filmmaking, and our current featured project, The Streets of Denver.

In this project, students spend the month working and filming in downtown Denver, using a rented office space as their home base. All of the films are based on the theme of “Coming-of- Age.” Each student will create a film, and all will have experienced the entire filmmaking process including writing a screenplay, shooting hours of footage, evaluating their work and re- shooting as needed, and all post-production work. Additionally, the students will have experiences outside their own project: they will participate in a workshop at Denver Open Media and learn to use a digital master control system, field cameras, audio and lighting, work in a TV studio, practice Chromakey, and set-up two mock TV shows. They will also visit and experience the University of Colorado Film School, and see the Denver Center for the Performing Art’s production of the Book of Will. Students will use their observations and experiences in the city and on the streets as inspiration and to enrich the settings of their 10-minute short films.
