Jackie Howard, William Smith’s first recipient of the Daniels Fund Scholarship, was an active and engaged member of the William Smith community. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Rudder, our student leadership group. She was a volleyball player, participated in the Aurora LIGHTS program, and many other accomplishments. This devotion to community has continued for Jackie as she engages in her studies at California State University – East Bay as a double major in Mathematics and Industrial Engineering. She is the social chair of Sigma Gamma Rho and is currently working with her sorority on road maps to college for minority students in grades 6-10. Jackie works for Hayward Unified School District as a tutor for students in middle and high school. She is treasurer of the Black Student Union on campus and is currently working to educate the East Bay Area on the social and political injustices against African-Americans. Jackie is working to establish a chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers on campus in hopes that she will be able to create a network of minority students in all of the STEM-related majors.
